Hiraodai Experience Walk
From karst to an ancient mountain village of Shugendo
From the karst plateau that stretches across the southern outskirts of Kitakyushu City to the ancient mountain village of Shugendo. The wind blowing across the karst. The wildflowers at your feet.
The sounds of wild birds echoing in the blue sky. The lives of the people who live there.
The ancient mountain ascetic caves and small rice terraces and villages in the mountains overlooking the city.
When not hiking, we use local transportation that supports local life.

First, we depart from Kokura Station on a local diesel train. The view from the train window gradually moves from the city to the suburbs.
Get off at the unmanned station and head to Hiraodai on the reservation-only local transportation service "Odekake Kotsu."

We start our walk from Hiraodai Nature Observation Center.
Take your time to explore the karst grasslands, where flocks of white sheep can be found , encountering wild flowers and birds of all seasons. You will surely be able to get a sense of the lives of the people of this area and their connection with nature.

Take a break in this small marshland, a rare sight in the karst world, and feel the pleasant breeze caressing your cheeks.
Overlooking the plains of Buzen, head to the mysterious limestone cave "Seiryu Cave."
We will walk down the same old path from the cave where the monks underwent rigorous training to the Tokakuji village.

A mountain village overlooking the sea and plains of Buzen.
The rice terraces will silently tell you about the changing seasons and the lives of the villagers. Another great attraction of Tokakuji village is the ability to purchase the local produce that the villagers have painstakingly produced.
At the end of your trip, take a taxi back down the mountain and take the JR train from Kanda Station back to Kokura Station.
